Treasury
Last year saw treasury remaining in the spotlight; we saw continued PE activity, FTSE 250/100 reshuffles, mergers, acquisitions and demergers.
The finance transformation journey is fully back on the agenda, and 'best in class' is the focus of CFOs and Treasurers. With automation being key, an emphasis on utilising business service centres, a tough bond market, FX volatility and interest rate increases, treasury has remained front and centre and a key figure in the CFO's leadership team.
The year
Corporate finance (and alternative funding strategies and deleveraging), ESG, and working capital are back on the agenda. In addition, a focus on creating 'Best in class' treasuries and strategic partners have been core to the hiring demands we witnessed in 2022.
Treasury operations continue to be supported more centrally, either from shared service centres or regional treasury hubs, with teams looking to enhance these activities further and better manage and utilise available cash.
Regarding Group Treasurer hiring, experience within refinancing, public placement and alternative funding was highly sought-after. Equally broad-based treasury, finance and tax skills are being called upon increasingly within treasury as we see tax and finance professionals moving into the function, especially within leadership roles, as combined head of tax & treasury or including pensions & risk are increasingly commonplace.
With the consistent demand for treasury, companies looking to hire strategic treasury professionals at the head of or group treasurer level has not diminished and is evident across listed environments, financial services, and a continued trend by PE-backed businesses to see treasury as a critical seat around the CFOs table.
If we look at the Private Equity space and their portfolio companies, there has been a continued hiring demand for first-time treasurers. Looking at those asset management and brokerage firms, treasury continues to come into its own, where a small move on basis points can turn the dial on the business. We have seen teams in this space expand due to increased regulation and a greater focus on how hedging, funding strategies, and automation can positively impact the bottom line.
